One thing of my childhood that I miss most is going off to scout camp. I spent ten summers where at least one week was spent in the forested embrace of that space. The hikes with songs ringing in the trees, the pool with water games, the required hour of rest after lunch are but distant memories now that I’m in college, too old to be so carefree. Now that I am old enough to be a leader, I’m tempted to share my experiences and help others create such memories, but the pay is so low and my students loans so large that it’s not an option for me.
